Gary K. Hart | Board Member

Gary K. Hart serves as a member of the Board of Directors for The Campaign for College Opportunity. He is a former state legislator (1974-1994), former Secretary of Education (1999-2000) and was founder and director of the California State University’s Institute for Education Reform (1995-1994; 2000-2005).
As Chairman of the Senate Education Committee and as Secretary of Education, he played a leadership role in the creation of major legislation relevant to the work of The Campaign for College Opportunity, including: the California ScholarShare Program; the Community College Transfer Agreement Act of 1991; state funding for AVID, and APLE, the Assumption Program of Loans for Education.
Hart serves on a number of boards, including the Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC), the Cotsen Family Foundation, and the Charter Schools Development Center.
A California public school K-12 graduate, Hart has a Bachelor’s Degree from Stanford and a Master’s of Arts in Teaching from Harvard University and has done graduate work in history at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and the University of California, Davis.
