My dream

The dream that I encapsulate deep within my heart’s core,

That dream that would grant me the ability to spread my wings and soar,

The pinnacle of education is where I belong,

To challenge my capabilities and sing my own song,

The coveted spot in college, why should it be mine?

I’ve had to walk a life that hasn’t always been a tangent line,

Raised by a single mother who never had time,

Time to watch a movie, time to read a book, or even a nursery rhyme,

Time only existed to earn money for a family of three,

Where did this leave me?

Desolate, alone, and never with a single dream in my soul,

But something happened and I developed a goal,

To become a better person and forget my past,

To live for myself, and to be successful and happy at last,

To go to college, maybe do business and one day act,

To go to college and not be a statistical black,

To walk on the road that Martin Luther King Jr. once paved,

My spot is already made,

I know where I have come from and I know where I am going,

No weakness of mine will be showing,

Why should you save me a spot?

Because I am determined to not,

To not be one of those who gangbangs in the night,

One of those who is illiterate and can’t read or write,

I am going to be a sophisticated African American male,

Forget the statistics; you’ll never see my face in jail,

I am going to make my mark and not just dot,

This is the reason why I deserve that golden spot.
