The “Golden” State
Should California save me a spot in college? The California I know and love is a leader in industry, a leader in environmental protection, and California teachers lead the way in high education standards. All of these things and more make California the Golden State.
The fact that I am in 6th grade and have to worry about getting into college, however, certainly doesn’t seem golden to me. Whether I’m destined for greatness or not isn’t the issue. Not being able to have the opportunity is what’s at stake.
I would prefer to attend a California college because, like many other families, I need to have as much money as possible going toward my tuition, room, and board. The price of flights or gas money getting to a school that is in a different state would be far too expensive.
Today, colleges turn down more and more entries and it is also getting harder to get scholarships. The end result is that it is getting harder and harder to get into a college in California.
In a state that prides itself on leadership in so many fields, I hate to think that I might get left behind due to some circumstance out of my control. As long as I do my part, such as good attendance, getting strong grades, and keeping out of trouble, it seems I should be able to at least have the chance to shine in college.
The future of California rests in the hands of education. I want to think of our state as a golden one, not something that is tarnished.
