As a judge you would help us award more than $125,000 in college scholarships to hundreds of students across California who participate in our "Save Me a Spot in College" scholarship contest. Middle school and high school students across the state are answering the question, "Why should California leaders save you and your peers a spot in college?" Last year more than 14,000 students participated and we anticipate thousands of students will enter again this year. With this wonderful response from students, we will need to rely on the generosity of volunteers to help us review the entries. We can assure you that this will be a rewarding experience.
Judges will be emailed or mailed (per their preference) a batch of approximately 30 or less entries in the written word category (i.e. short essays, poems, letters, stories, etc). Each bundle will consist of entries of students in similar grade levels and regions in the state. No entry is more than 400 words, and most are much shorter than that. Upon receiving their batch of entries, judges will have 2 weeks to nominate and rank their top 3 entries by completing a short nomination chart online. There is no training necessary and judging criteria and specific directions will be provided with the batch of entries.
To volunteer as a contest judge please complete the online volunteer judge form here. Starting February 1st, 2010, Elizabeth Robles will contact you with information about your batch of entries. Please note: Middle and high school students may not volunteer as judges.
You will find that volunteering as a contest judge will not take up any significant amount of your time.
