Then I joined A.V.I.D.

Every morning I wake up thinking about the day my mom and I will have. My mom working hard as a house cleaner and I trying my best at school. It is hard not to care about how many obstacles my mom has to pass by every single day to get a couple hundred dollars a week to pay the rent, food, transportation (public bus) and many other necessities we may have over the week. It is also hard to maintain my good grades, support my mom and overcome many family problems.

When I was 12 years old and my brother was 17, our parents separated. All our dreams as a family were destroyed. At that time I had to decide between living with my mother or with my father, and even though my brother and I were old enough to understand our parent's problems we had a really hard time. After my mother decided to move to the United States, my dad and I had our last father-daughter conversation. It was the most hurtful conversation because he told me that I had disappointed him by deciding to move with my mother instead of staying and supporting him.

He also added that he would never support me with my education, and finally putting me down intentionally he stated that I was probably not even going to make into high school. It was when my dream of becoming a pediatrician fell apart. After about a year I saw my dad again, I held so much hate and disappointment towards him that I could not even say hi to him. Months passed by and my dad and I gradually started to communicate but I could not forget those words he had told me before coming to California.

My plans for the future after graduating from high school were to get a job and support my mom and myself, but my way of thinking has changed since I decided to fight for my dream with or without my father's support. I was invited to join AVID and I immediately knew that it was a great opportunity. My eighth grade AVID teacher encouraged me to apply for a scholarship contest and for the AVID award recipient, so I did, and I did not win the AVID award recipient, but I won a medal and three hundred dollars. I had planned to start saving that money for college but unfortunately I could not because my mom needed that money for the rent.

I have had many accomplishments that make me a deserving student to have a spot saved for me in college. The two most important characteristics are my determination and effort; these skills will help me get into college and fight for my dreams. I am motivated, and my biggest dream is to go to college and become a pediatrician.

Sometimes I think that I dream impossible things for myself or that I dream too much. But if you save me a spot in college I will fight for my dreams to come true, knowing that I don?'t dream impossible things.

So please SAVE ME A SPOT IN COLLEGE!

Sincerely,

Ana
