Why should California leaders save a spot for me and my peers in college?
Because California needs a bouquet of flowers. You know, the kind that has a whole bunch of different types of flowers. Nothing too expensive, like roses. But just a great mix of ordinary flowers that if given a chance really looks good when they all come together. They complement each other, some are showy and pretty, while others smell good. By themselves, they just really don't do much, but put them together and WOW! Sometimes, to keep the bouquet looking nice, new flowers have to be added.
I’m a little flower. My name is Rachel Johnson. I am a sixth grader at Treeview Elementary School in Hayward. And I am surrounded by hundreds of other flowers that will become California's future. We all have to be represented. We all have to contribute because we all have talents and skills that will make California better. Some of us flowers are artistic, others are hi-tech, while still others excel in the sciences. Then there are the sturdy flowers, the ones with the unbreakable stems, you know, the business flowers that hold the bouquet together in a strong wind. They are the sunflowers of our bouquet, not that pretty to look at but boy are they tough. Then there are the exotic flowers, the ones that make people say "wow, where did they come from" and "they really add a lot to the bouquet."
So here we are, your flowers in a vast garden we call California. You can help us grow. You can make us strong. Your scholarships will be the help we need to grow even more. All we need is a little miracle food.
I am hoping that you will nurture me, and maybe add a bit of miracle food (scholarship) so that when I am ready to be picked, I will be able to take my place in California's bouquet and contribute to her beauty, strength, and success. And who knows, maybe someday I will be saving a spot for your little flowers.
Sincerely,
Rachel |
