The most valuable lottery ticket

Andrea Rios, 12th Grade

A college education is without a doubt the most valuable lottery ticket around. It is a once in a lifetime chance to flourish in life and not that very many people have the privilege to attend college for one reason or another, but mainly because of money shortages. California leaders should save my peers and I a spot in college because most of our parents immigrated to America with the sole purpose to offer us a better future, we all come from a community where education is usually underestimated, and we all deserve the opportunity to become someone of importance.

Santa Ana has been my hometown all my life and I am not ashamed of it. When society thinks of Santa Ana, they think drugs, gang violence, and underachieving students. It hurts me because they don't see that among those who are careless about their lives, there are those who have big dreams and aspirations. Mostly all of my friends are Chicanos, Mexican American, and they all have hardworking parents who expect them to do well in school and go off to college.

Over the years, I have learned to value and appreciate the daily sacrifices of Hispanic parents in my community. For that reason, it is my determination to receive a college education. I am resolved to emerge out of a community where education is typically underestimated and become someone of importance, but most importantly, it is my ambition to make my parent's daily struggle worth the pain. I am positive that all of my peers feel the same way as I do and we will certainly not give up until we have reached our most desired goals in life.

My peers and I deserve the opportunity to prove to the world that we are capable of making a great contribution to this country. Most of us either want to become lawyers, doctors, nurses as well as other occupations which will help us be of assistance to our community. California leaders should take our dreams into consideration and save us all a spot in college. We are the future of this nation and they shouldn't keep any of us from achieving our career objectives. It is our ambition to become someone of importance and make our parents and this country proud.

A college education is without a doubt the most valuable lottery ticket around. If California leaders save me and my peers a spot in college, it will be our promise to make the most out of this opportunity.
