Erik Alfaro, a 6th grader at Horace Mann Middle School in San Francisco Unified School District, is congratulated by his mom after giving his speech. The audience included 6th graders from Horace Mann and Martin Luther King, Jr. Middle Schools, District Superintendent Carlos Garcia, SF State President Robert Corrigan, Gordon Jackson, Assistant Superintendent of the California Department of Education, and reporters. |
Hello, my name is Erik. I was born here in the United States, but my family comes from Mexico. I want to go to college so I can be an engineer or artist. I want to help people with problems by fixing their things, and maybe go to different places and meet new people. I want to be an artist because I love to draw. I want people to see my art and say, "Wow." With this scholarship it will help me achieve my goal of going to college.
To reach this goal there are many things I need to do. Here is some advice to get us to college. You have to get good grades so you can enter a good college. You should also finish middle and high school. When you finish middle school you are closer to college, but not there yet. You also have to be hardworking because things don't get easier since college isn't easy, it's hard!
One thing that helps you get ready for college is being attentive. If you're attentive you can listen for instructions on how to do something.
You should be helpful to others because it shows character. It shows that you care about others even if you don't gain anything from it. Also it makes you feel good about yourself.
Thank you!
