News Blog California Group Highlights Programs to Expand College Access and Success By Sara Hebel The Chronicle of Higher Education | Government & Politics | October 24, 2007
The Campaign for College Opportunity, a California-based nonprofit group, released a report today that highlights 15 programs that the group says show promise in expanding access to college and improving students’ preparation so they are more likely to succeed once they get there.
“What these programs have in common is they simplify the process of going to college, they forge connections between high schools, community colleges, and universities, and they clear a path for student success,” said Abdi Soltani, the group’s executive director.
The highlighted programs, which were chosen from 120 submissions, include those operated by California colleges and by public schools in the state. Among them are Compact for Success, a partnership between San Diego State University and the Sweetwater Union High School District, and a program known as MESA (Mathematics Engineering Science Achievement), which is run by the University of California.
